  • The town of Chojnice

Chojnice is a town located in the province of Pomerania. The first mention of the town comes from the year 1275. In 1309 the city came under the rule of the Teutonic Knights. The Knights, taking advantage of the fact that the town is surrounded by two lakes (Knights and Green), built a defensive system of fortifications, shafts and double moats. Thus arose the three gates of the city (Czluchowska, Mlynska and Gdanska) and 24 towers, which reinforced the walls. Chojnice’s nickname, “Gate of Pomerania,” dates from this time. The city was a strong link in the military defense of the Teutonic system. The Teutonic Knights began to create the first urban Chojnice.
Today Chojnice has more than 40-thousand inhabitiants and is the largest town in the area. The seat of the county government is located here and it is the centre of economics, commerce and culture in southern part of the province of Pomerania.
